exceptions). With orchids, as
with many other plants and animals,
deforestation and poaching took a heavy toll in
the past, but there is hope
it might get better in the future. Several
projects in Thailand are dedicated to
preserve the genetic pool, breed the orchids in
the nursery and reintroduce some species into
the former habitat.
Thailand is
the world’s largest exporter of fresh
orchids and some of them can be
discovered in various orchid nurseries
and shops in Phuket and other towns. For
many Thais the beautiful orchid flowers
are a synonym of Thailand.
As it is a
delicate matter to grow orchids (some
species even need
about 4 years to blossom first time) the nurseries
usually specialize just on a couple of species /
hybrids. Generally speaking, orchid species are
taboo for export, orchid hybrids are the ones
raised in the nursery.
For “take away” of orchids, there are 3 ways,
either you take the whole orchid plant in the
pot(last for long time with proper treatment)
also in a different climate like Europe etc.,
take only the orchid cut flower (right before
you leave) the cut flowers stay ok for up to 1
month in a colder climate with proper treatment,
or take the orchid “seedlings in the bottle”
(e.g. at the nursery mentioned below) and handle
them according to the instructions. What you
need with orchids in general is a sense for
beauty and patience, the flower need a lot of
time, care and ....maybe call it love.
For all relevant
information (which orchids are available, care
of orchids, growing orchids, pictures of
orchids, the
environment, the handling, how and where to buy
and export them etc. pls. go e.g. to Chalong in
Phuket, pass the circle towards Rawai, after the
school (you will see a sign post...Phuket Orchid
farm..) do a right turn. You will find
everything on orchids you want to see, there is
a entrance fee (Thai and farang same fee !!) of
baht 60 including a information leaflet, its
worth it. If you also want to picture this
beauties you should visit the place around 5
o’clock pm, at that time the sun position is
just right for the shooting. Everything is
there, dendrobium orchids, white orchids, pink
orchids, violet orchids and many other orchids
with all kind of colors.
For immediate orchid “consumption” on the
island, many small shops usually in the vicinity
of 7-11 stores offer fresh cut orchids with a
very low pricing. Small bundles with up to 10
orchid blooms and some green leaves around go
for 10 baht. A bunch of orchids with about 20-25
stems go for baht 150. All this shops usually
offer the same type of orchid hybrids, so
it needs to visit the nursery for a more
sophisticated bundle. Since all orchid flowers
offered in the shops around the island are from
the nursery there is not need to think about
endangered orchid species. The hunting and
smuggling out of the endangered orchid species
is usually done in the north of Thailand.
All this beautiful orchid blooms are really a
feast for the eye and an admired decoration in
any home, or maybe just in the hotel room during
your stay on the island. If you bought some of
this orchid beauties just ask for a empty water
bottle in your hotel, cut off the top and you
have a
suitable vase, or e.g. if you get them directly
from the nursery they fix a small plastic
container

which keep the orchid happy and alive for a
week. The orchid flowers don’t need fresh water
every day and last for about 10 days. Just buy a
bundle of orchids and you will have some
visually happy days. |

Orchids are
beautiful flowers. The interesting thing
about orchids is that they seem to draw
people to them. There is hardly another
plant or flower that has been able to
capture the attention and desire of
people the way orchids have. In the past
orchids have been hunted and collected
in almost every part of the world. Today
there are millions of people who are
absolutely devoted to the plant and its
beautiful "faces."
It’s
estimated that there are nearly 20
thousand varieties of orchids. They grow
in many different climates and regions.
There are some important factors to
consider when growing your orchids.
Light is probably the single most
important factor in determining whether
or not your plants will bloom. The
appropriate amount of light is necessary
for proper plant growth and nutrient
storage. Without the right light levels,
your plant either cannot produce enough
food stores to power a blooming cycle.
Too much light may burn the orchid and
too little light will not support its
needs.
An
interesting feature of growing orchids
is that a plant can live for a long time
even with light that is less than ideal,
but you probably won't have any flowers.
On the other side thought a large and
healthy plant that has grown for a long
time without enough light will often put
on an impressive display once given
proper lighting. This means that orchids
are very durable and resilient.
As you seek
to grow the perfect orchid, take your
time and look around as you decide where
in your garden you’d like to grow
orchids. It will be well worth the
patient time and effort you put in to
see splendid, beautiful orchids in full
